Can My Panel Handle an EV Charger?

Many homes can add a charger, but it depends on how much of the panel's capacity is already used.

What we check

• The main breaker size (100, 150 or 200 amps).

• The existing electrical load from the range, dryer, AC, water heater and other large loads. An electrician calculates this with the method in the electrical code.

• Free breaker spaces for a 240-volt circuit.

• Panel age and condition.

Your options

Enough capacity: add a dedicated circuit.

Tight capacity: a smart charger or load management device can limit charging when other big loads run, where the code and the inspector allow it.

Not enough capacity: upgrade the panel or service.
