Why Are My Lights Flickering?

Most flickering is harmless, but some is an early warning of a loose connection. Start with the simple causes.

Harmless causes

• A loose or incompatible bulb. Tighten it. LED bulbs on an older dimmer often flicker; use a dimmer rated for LEDs.

• A large appliance starting. A brief dim when the AC or a well pump starts can be normal.

Causes that need an electrician

• Loose wiring at a switch, fixture or outlet. Loose connections can arc and overheat. Flickering that comes with a warm switch plate, a burning smell or buzzing needs prompt attention.

• A failing neutral or main connection. Lights in the whole house pulse, or some get brighter while others dim. Turn off major appliances and call immediately.

• An overloaded circuit or an aging panel. Flickering that happens together with tripping breakers points here.

• Utility voltage problems. If neighbors see it too, contact your utility.
