Why Won't My GFCI Outlet Reset?

2 min read

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet cuts power in a fraction of a second when it senses current leaking to ground. That protects people near water in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, laundry rooms, and outdoors. When the Reset button will not click back on, the outlet is doing its job or it has failed. Here is a safe order to check before you call.

Safe checks you can do first

  1. Press Reset firmly. You should hear a click. If nothing happens, keep going.

  2. Unplug everything from that outlet and from any outlets that go dead with it (a single GFCI often protects a string of downstream outlets).

  3. Check the breaker. If the breaker for that circuit is off or tripped, reset it once, then try the GFCI Reset again.

  4. Check for another GFCI upstream. In some houses a bathroom, garage, or exterior GFCI protects other rooms. Reset that one first, then return to the dead outlet.

  5. Look for moisture. A wet plug, a damp box, or outdoor weather can keep a GFCI from holding Reset until things dry out.

If Reset works after you unplug loads, plug devices back in one at a time. The one that trips it again is usually the problem (a failing appliance, a damaged cord, or water in a tool).

Why Reset still will not work

Makers such as Eaton and Leviton design modern GFCIs so they will not reset when:

  • There is no power on the LINE side (breaker off, loose feed, or another upstream trip)

  • LINE and LOAD wires are reversed (common after DIY or a rushed install; the device lockout blocks Reset on purpose)

  • There is still a ground fault on the circuit (damaged cable, wet box, bad appliance still connected on the LOAD side)

  • The GFCI has failed its internal self-test (end of life). Many units show a steady fault/LED pattern when they need replacement

Do not keep forcing the button, and do not bypass the GFCI with a regular outlet. That removes shock protection the code requires in wet areas.

When to call an electrician

Call if Reset still fails after unplugging loads and checking the breaker, if the outlet or plate is warm, if you smell burning, if half the kitchen or bath is dead, or if this keeps happening after a storm or remodel. On the North Shore, from Northbrook outward, we diagnose whether the fault is the device, the wiring, or a downstream load, replace failed GFCIs, and correct LINE/LOAD miswires so protection actually works.

Test every GFCI monthly (Test, then Reset) as the CPSC recommends. A button that will not Reset is a safety signal, not a nuisance.
